Alba Iulia tourist attractions - What to visit?
Alba Carolina Fortress
The Bastionara Alba Carolina Citadel is the most famous tourist attraction and of historical importance in the entire Alba county. It was built in the 18th century on the Citadel Hill in Alba Iulia with the role of defense of the Habsburg Empire. It has 6 gates: gates I (main), II and III in the eastern area, and gates IV, V and VI in the western area.
Today, it is an attraction without which you cannot say you have visited Alba Iulia. Within the Citadel there are numerous museums, parks and important monuments, such as The obelisk of Horea, Closca and Crisan 20 m high. On Saturdays and Sundays, the Changing of the Guard takes place at 12:00 with free access for the public.
National Museum of the Union
National Museum of the Union was founded in 1888, although the building was built in the middle of the 19th century and represents the largest edifice in the romantic style in Alba Iulia. Before it became a museum, the building housed officers of the Habsburg Empire, but today it presents visitors with over 200,000 valuable heritage objects: from prehistoric times to the times of the Dacians and Romans, the Middle Ages and up to the World Wars. The complete tour of the museum inside the Citadel lasts about 1 hour, and tickets start from 10 lei/adult.
Union Hall
The Union Hall is also located within the Citadel, facing the National Museum of the Union. Access is free and you can admire a large ethnographic exhibition! Coronation Cathedral
The Coronation Cathedral from Alba Iulia today it is the Cathedral of the Orthodox Episcopate of Alba Iulia and its construction was completed in 1922. The coronation ceremony of King Ferdinand and Queen Maria took place here in 1922. Its Byzantine architecture is all the more beautified by 4 marble slabs that illustrates various religious and cultural events. The cathedral is also located in the Alba Carolina Citadel.
Apor Palace
The Apor Palace is among the most splendid buildings in Carolina Citadel and Alba Iulia. It was built in the 17th century and served as the residence of the Count of Steinville. The building has elements of baroque architecture and is decorated in Austrian style with military inspirations. Inside it, today there are departments of the "December 1, 1918" University, but it is worth admiring its imposing exterior decoration!
